Advancing zero-emission ferry transport

M.V. NERTHUS & M.V. TYRFING

Project details

M.V. Nerthus and M.V. Tyrfing are two fully electric RoPax ferries developed for Molslinjen's Alslinjen service, demonstrating how innovative vessel design and battery-electric propulsion can support the transition to sustainable ferry operations.

Designed for zero-emission operation, the vessels combine efficient hull design, advanced battery technology and modern charging infrastructure to deliver reliable and environmentally responsible transport without compromising operational performance or passenger comfort.

Throughout the project, OSK Design worked closely with the owner and stakeholders to develop a ferry solution tailored to the route's operational requirements while preparing the vessels for the future of green maritime transport.

From route analysis to delivery support

OSK Design was involved throughout the entire design process, beginning with route analysis and operational profiling to establish the optimal vessel concept for the service.

Our multidisciplinary team delivered concept, tender, contract and basic design, while also developing the vessels' exterior appearance and livery. In addition, OSK Design supported the integration of the battery and charging infrastructure and provided technical owner support throughout the project.

The result is two efficient electric ferries that combine operational reliability with significantly reduced environmental impact.

Award-winning sustainable ferry design

The project has been recognised internationally for its contribution to sustainable shipping. In 2025, M.V. Nerthus received the Shortsea Ferry of the Year award, acknowledging the vessels as an important benchmark for the next generation of electric regional ferry services.

By combining operational efficiency, passenger comfort and zero-emission propulsion, Nerthus and Tyrfing demonstrate how electrification can successfully be implemented in modern ferry operations.
