PRESS RELEASE: New fishery inspection vessel designed by OSK Design

Written by OSK-ShipTech | 10 August 2020

Danish naval architects OSK Design were appointed consultants for the newbuilding back in 2018 to provide concept and basic design, tender process, and on-site supervision during construction. Now the tender is closed, and Danish Fisheries Agency has revealed the builder of their new inspection vessel.
Ny Vestkysten – the new, future-proof fishery inspection vessel, will be built by Danish yard Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel and Service and will replace the existing MV Vestkysten from 1987.

After 18 months of elaborate design development, tender process, and final contract meetings with short-listed candidates, the final choice stood between two esteemed Danish yards, both with long shipbuilding traditions. But, in the end, Danish Fisheries Agency awarded Hvide Sande Shipyard the Euro 22.8M new-building contract. OSK Design has designed the multi-purpose inspection vessel with flexibility and sustainability in mind, and Hvide Sande Shipyard will draw on their experience within sustainable solutions when it comes to fuel efficiency, insulation, and use of materials.

Mogens Jensen, Minister for Food, Fisheries and Equal Opportunities is happy that The Danish Fisheries Agency has unveiled the builder of the Agency’s new inspection vessel: “The vessel will be built at Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel and Service – a Danish shipyard known for its proud shipbuilding traditions and quality craftsmanship. The foundation is now laid for an inspection vessel with maximum efficiency as well as being state-of-the-art when it comes to environmental requirements, energy optimisation, and noise reduction.”

In addition to its main purpose as fishery inspection vessel for the North Sea and Skagerrak area, the new vessel is designed to fit future inspection challenges, e.g. by the use of large drones, and cover service functions such as emergency towing assistance, salvage, and surveys.

“It has been a pleasure working with the ‘crew’ of the Danish Fisheries Agency. The design and development of special vessels like this is one of OSK Designs core expertises,” says Kristian Carøe Lind, CTO of OSK Design. He continues: “We have more than fifty years’ experience in designing special vessels so we are really looking forward to this project, where we are pulling on all our specialised core competences.”

“It is always a very fruitful and beautiful process when the profound understanding of operational and functional requirements from the client’s side merges with the technical skills of our project team,” says Kristian Carøe Lind, and adds: “We are now looking forward to continue this excellent corporation during the detail- and production design phases and during actual construction.”

Ny Vestkysten is partly funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and expected for delivery by summer 2022.
