A Danish Coin Beneath the Mast: A Maritime Tradition for OilRec
A centuries-old maritime tradition was honoured in Gdańsk, Poland, as representatives of Orlogsskibe Danmark gathered for the coin ceremony of OilRec, currently under construction for the Royal Danish Navy.
The ceremony marks an important milestone in the construction of the new vessel and celebrates a tradition that has connected shipbuilders and seafarers across generations.
A tradition of good fortune and safe voyages
During the ceremony, a coin is placed beneath the mast of the vessel while it is under construction. According to maritime tradition, the coin serves as a symbol of good fortune, protection and safe voyages for the vessel and its future crew.
The ritual is a meaningful part of the shipbuilding process, bringing together the people who are involved in the vessel's creation to mark its progress and look ahead to its future service at sea.
Building the future of the Royal Danish Navy
The construction of OilRec is part of the development of new vessels for the Royal Danish Navy. The project brings together Danish maritime expertise and the close collaboration of the partners in the Orlogsskibe Danmark consortium: OSK Design, Karstensens Skibsværft and Hvide Sande Shipyard.
The coin ceremony represents another important step in the vessel's journey from construction to service. As work continues in the shipyard, the tradition provides a moment to celebrate the craftsmanship, cooperation and shared commitment behind the project.
With OilRec taking shape, the Orlogsskibe Danmark consortium continues its work towards delivering new vessels for the Royal Danish Navy.
